Diabetes is a global epidemic that affects millions of people around the world. In the United States alone, an estimated 23.6 million people or 7.8% of the population have diabetes. Of the people with diabetes, 15% will experience a wound on their foot called a diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) in their lifetime. If left untreated, these wounds may become infected and lead to serious complications.
Many healthcare providers do not fully understand the complexity of healing a DFU. As a result, many DFUs remain unhealed. There are specialists (wound care specialists) who can help. Using the most appropriate treatment options, wound care specialists can treat DFUs quickly and safely. The Heal2gether Partnership Program was created to use education and action to foster awareness about diabetic foot ulcers and wound care specialists, to ultimately improve patients’ outcomes.
